    Mad Catz Interactive, Inc., a leading third-party interactive entertainment accessory provider, announced today that it has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Microsoft Corporation.     Blizzard’s European support centre in Cork, Ireland has seen its original staff of 100 people increase to a workforce of over 600, with further development in training and technology still planned.

    The centre opened in 2007 and expected to create 100 new jobs only by 2010. The more rapid expansion has seen Blizzard sign a second agreement with IDA (Industrial Development Agency) Ireland to implement a series of new support tools, technologies and training routines.

    “The Cork centre has played an integral role in providing support to our European players, and with the help of IDA Ireland, it has greatly exceeded our initial expectations,” said Blizzard CEO Paul Sams.

    Crytek co-founder Avni Yerli has joined the advisory board for this year’s GDC Europe conference, which will be taking place just before gamescom in Cologne in August.

    Yerli, who is the company’s managing director, has overseen the growth of Crytek to over 470 staff members since it was formed in 1999, releasing Far Cry and Crysis along the way.

    “I am flattered to have joined the GDC Europe advisory board and am looking forward to working with a talented group of advisors,” said Yerli. “Together with their strong opinions and vision, I am confident that the advisory board can create a conference that will hit the industry’s nerve.”

    A new Nintendo DS title from Professor Layton makers Level-5 has entered straight in at number one in the weekly Japanese software charts, although sales across the board remain depressed.

    As the top-selling game of the week Sloan to Michael: Nazo no Monogatari (roughly Sloan and Michael’s Mysterious Story) sold just 44,000 units.

    Also new at number two is Sega’s Pro Yakyuu Team o Tsukurou! 2 (roughly Let’s Make a Pro Baseball Team! 2) for the DS, which sold an equally underwhelming 39,000 units.

    As part of a larger plan to reduce purchasing costs in a weakened economy, Sony has announced that it will reduce its parts suppliers by more than half.

    The plan, according to a report by Reuters, is to reduce its suppliers from an estimated 2500 to around 1200 by March 2011. It is just one aspect of CEO Howard Stringer’s strategy to reduce its spending by 20 per cent - or about USD 5.3 billion - in the current fiscal year.

    Earlier this month, Sony reported a USD 1 billion loss for the fiscal year ending March 31, with its videogame segment reporting an 18 per cent decline in sales.
