Electronic Arts VP and general manager of Casual, Harvey Elliott, has told GamesIndustry.biz that he’s not a fan of porting a game as-is to other platforms, but believes instead that time should be taken to “build great games for that platform”.

Speaking at a recent EA Play event in Paris, Elliott was answering a question about how the label approaches the potential of new platforms such as the iPhone.

“From a product standpoint I’ve long given up on the idea that you just port what you’ve got to that platform,” he replied. “I think a lot of platforms have come in with a lot of things which just naturally fit our customers - they’re either people that are buying that platform for a reason, or they’ve got technology that works in a certain way (such as the Wii with motion controls).

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said that High Street retail still has the competitive edge over digital sales, and he doesn’t expect a significant change to the way consumers purchase games in the near term.

Nintendo’s WiiWare and DSiWare releases are efforts by the company to appeal to consumers who are keen to buy product online, but Iwata admitted that digital sales for the company have only seen a small increase since the initial launch of the services.

“Already today, a number of people are aware of and appreciate the convenience of online shopping,” said Iwata during a recent conference call. “Accordingly, Nintendo must be making efforts to provide them with the new mode of shopping.

Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney believes that games will achieve true visual realism in ten to fifteen years, saying that games are “only a factor of a thousand off” from achieving graphical perfection.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Sweeney said that graphical realism is not only possible, but inevitable.

“We’re only about a factor of a thousand off from achieving all that in real-time without sacrifices,” said Sweeney. “So we’ll certainly see that happen in our lifetimes; it’s just a result of Moore’s Law. Probably 10-15 years for that stuff, which isn’t far at all.”

The US state of California has issued an appeal to the United States Supreme Court to consider its controversial law restricting the sale of violent videogames to minors, a statement from the state Senator published by GamePolitics revealed.

The bill, first signed by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005, would restrict minors from purchasing a videogame rated as violent, and would leave retailers open to a USD 1000 fine for infractions.

The law was found to be unconstitutional that year by US District Court judge Ronald Whyte, and was never put into practice. Schwarzenegger appealed the decision to the US 9th Circuit Court who, in February of this year, upheld Whyte’s original decision.
